What documents are required for air freight shipments?

The basic documents for air freight customs clearance typically include: Air Waybill (AWB), commercial invoice, and packing list. Depending on the cargo type and destination requirements, you may also need a certificate of origin, import license, MSDS (for chemicals), UN 38.3 report (for lithium batteries), etc.

How is the chargeable weight calculated?

Air freight billing follows the "charge the greater of the two" principle: compare the actual gross weight with the volumetric weight, and use the larger figure as the chargeable weight. The formula for volumetric weight is usually: Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 6000. For "light cargo" (low-density shipments), the volumetric weight can far exceed the actual weight, potentially doubling the freight cost. Many people estimate freight based only on actual weight, only to discover after warehouse measurement that the chargeable weight has surged, causing budget overruns.
